Me

My name is Russell, and I am a natural history and documentary producer and director based in Canada, specializing in underwater environments. My experience includes roles as Producer, Director, Cinematographer, and Dive Advisor on the forthcoming CBC, PBS, Arté, and Love Nature series Life on the Edge; Assistant Producer, Field Director, and Cinematographer for the CBC and PBS Shared Planet series; and as part of the Emmy Award-winning cinematography team behind Netflix’s Island of the Sea Wolves. I also won a Jackson Wild Award for the rather charming little film Tadpoles: The Big Little Migration.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and co-led the 2022 Great Island Expedition, which documented WWII shipwrecks. I also served as Editor of Canada’s DIVER magazine for nearly a decade. Because I can’t sit still, I founded the Canadian Underwater Film Network—an initiative dedicated to enhancing safety and standards in underwater filmmaking. My lifelong mission is to inspire a deeper appreciation for Canada’s stunning coastline, oceans, freshwater ecosystems, and underwater natural history.

Initially captivated by the grandeur of Hollywood blockbusters in my youth, I have since come to recognize that the most compelling stories and epic visuals are found in the natural world.

When not behind the camera or exploring the depths, I harbour a surprising fondness for rats—and I love cheese.
